“I'm fine” isn't dishonest. It's the fastest way to end a conversation you don't have the energy for after a hard shift — which makes complete sense mid-shift, when “fine” gets you through to the next task. At home, the same word just sounds like a door closing.

This is a Calibrate problem: the words you default to without noticing are just as much a pattern as the withdrawal itself. Below are ten calibrated responses — scripts that say the true thing instead of “fine,” without demanding energy you don't have.

01 “My brain is still at work. Give me five minutes to land, then I'm here.”
02 “Today was heavy. I don't want to talk details, but I don't want to disappear either.”
03 “I'm not upset with you — I'm still coming down from the shift.”
04 “Can we just sit together for a bit before I try to explain anything?”
05 “I need quiet, not space. Can you just be near me?”
06 “I've got about 20% left today. Can we keep it low-key?”
07 “Ask me again in an hour — I'll actually have an answer then.”
08 “I'm okay. I'm just recalibrating. Bear with me.”
09 “Tell me about your day first — I need a minute before mine.”
10 “I don't need advice right now. I just need you to know it was hard.”

Why this works

Each of these carries the same honesty as “fine” — you're still not launching into a full account of your day — but each one gives the person waiting for you something real to work with, instead of a closed door. That's the whole difference between shutting a conversation down and leaving it open a crack.
